Self Harm

Sometimes the things that we have experienced in life or the emotions we feel can seem very over-powering and they can be difficult to deal with. Pressure from families, schools and peers to conform and succeed can make you feel that you have no power or that your own feelings do not count. Many people who self harm have been abused although this does not mean that if you have experienced abuse you will self-harm.

You may feel that you

  • are always in an abusive relationship
  • want to smoke or drink too much
  • don't want to eat too much or too little
  • can only cope if you hurt yourself physically

If you are wanting to hurt yourself it does not mean you want to commit suicide. It may be that this is the only way you feel that you can control the emotions you have.

If you feel that you want to hurt yourself you will need to talk to someone or find a support group. You may find it helpful to keep a diary of when and why you hurt yourself.
