Unplanned pregnancy can be very tough to deal
with. It can cause feelings of shock, anger, fear, confusion,
guilt
Stresses
can include the following:
- Deciding
whether to keep the baby
- Uncertainty
about who the father is
- Whether
or not to tell your sexual partner/s
- Whether
to tell friends and / or family about the pregnancy
- The
confusion of perhaps wanting a baby at some point, but not
now
- Balancing
any moral or religious beliefs with your own needs and choices
- Feeling
physically unwell, because of the pregnancy
- Feeling
'in limbo' - uncertain what to do and how the future might
be
If
you or someone you know finds that they are pregnant, the following
suggestions might help:
- Take
a test to confirm that you are pregnant
- If
you have had unprotected sex, consider getting a check-up
for STD's (sexually transmitted diseases) at your local
GU (Genito-Urinary) Clinic
- Talk
the options through with your GP or another trained professional
- GP's are bound by a code of ethics which prevents them
from telling anyone, without your consent
- Consider
the practical and emotional support that you will need if
you go ahead with the pregnancy, or if you have an abortion.
Weigh up whether this support is available or how you can
get it
- Talk
it through with a friend, family member or counsellor, to
help you work out your own best decision
- Remember
that no one has the right to tell you what to do about this
- this decision is yours and no one else's
