Disability

The stress caused by living with the effect of a disability can affect people in many ways. You may feel very overwhelmed and unable to cope; anger, sadness, despair, panic, depression, and loneliness are just some of the emotions that you could be feeling. Different emotions can be brought on by all kinds of different things. It could be trying to get a balance between what you would like and what you need while striving for independence. The prejudice that some people show towards disability can affect how you feel about yourself and how you think other people feel about you.

Key points to remember

  • You are not alone disability effects a very large number of people, some obvious and some not so obvious. It can help to talk about your problems to others who are in the same or similar circumstances.
  • Its most probable that the way you are feeling is quite common. Click on any of the feelings buttons on the home page. These might help you to find ways of understanding your emotions.
  • Just talking about your anxieties to a friend or someone you feel you can trust can often help. The counselling service at college or university can offer a safe and confidential environment where you can talk things through. A list of these can be found here.
